Rural Wireless Broadband for Public Safety

A Department of Commerce Agency Priority Goal (APG) is a two-year initiative to improve performance of a specific high-priority policy or management area. Each APG has a goal leader, results-based goal statement, strategies, a plan of actions and milestones, and measurable performance targets. Most importantly, accomplishing an APG will have a significant positive impact on the lives of all U.S. citizens. This is one of five APGs the Department of Commerce has for 2020-2021.
Goal Leaders:  Edward Parkinson, Executive Director | Lisa Casias, Deputy Executive Director | Jeff Bratcher, Chief Technology and Operations Officer
Goal Statement: The Department of Commerce will increase the public’s safety by providing first responders with access to a nationwide wireless broadband network. By September 30, 2020, the Department’s FirstNet Solution will allow the public safety community to serve an additional 8.9 million people within the rural population by providing coverage reaching 55% of the entire rural population. By September 30, 2021, the Department will ensure the FirstNet Solution will provide coverage reaching 60% of the entire rural population. As of September 2019, the FirstNet Solution allows the public safety community to serve ~45% of the rural population, or ~23 million of the ~51 million people who constitute the Nation’s rural population.
Progress Update Summary: The FirstNet Authority conducted detailed review and analysis of the coverage-related deliverables to validate the coverage between October – December 2019. The FirstNet Authority analyzed the coverage data and determined that in FY20 Q1 the wireless broadband network covered an additional 4.5% of the rural population, which is approximately an additional 2.2 million people. The total rural population covered at the end of FY20 Q1 is 50%, which is approximately 25.6 million people. Click here to read the detailed Q1-Q2 FY 2020 Progress Update.
